Spiritual Guidance from H.H. Jigdal Dagchen Sakya & H.E. Dagmo Kusho Sakya
Sakya Monastery lamas are available to help Sakya Monastery members with spiritual questions about motivation and practicing the Dharma.

His  Holiness Jigdal Dagchen Sakya is available to provide one-on-one guidance regarding your Dharma practice.

Her Eminence Dagmo Kusho Sakya is available to provide personal guidance with Dharma practice in your daily life.

You can email questions about your spiritual practices to monastery@sakya.org and the Office Administrator will refer your email to H.H. JD Sakya or H.E. Dagmo Kusho.

Or you can call the Office Administrator at 206-789-2573 to request an audience with either H.H. JD Sakya or H.E. Dagmo Kusho.  In appreciate of the audience, it is Tibetan tradition to bring a katag and a monetary offering for the lama.

For more information, do not hesitate to contact the Monastery by email or phone.  The Monastery administrative office is open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am to noon.

The Community and the Opportunity
Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism is a spiritual community and cultural center led by renowned lamas from Tibet. It is dedicated to the realization and practice of wisdom, loving-kindness, and compassion, in order to nurture and bring happiness to all beings. The Monastery has several resident monks, but the congregation is largely composed of lay members. They actively embrace patience, kindness, generosity, and peace in their lives.

As a lay member you enjoy the rare and extraordinary privilege of studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism directly under the guidance of lamas who were trained in traditional Tibet before the Chinese occupation (1959). H.H. Jigdal Dagchen Sakya, the founder and leader of the Monastery, is one of the few qualified lamas capable of bestowing Buddha’s most important oral teachings and transmissions. He is the second eldest non-sectarian Tibetan Buddhist Master living today.

Reflections on the Value of Membership

  • Teachings and meditations taught by Rinpoche and conducted by other resident members are so important in guiding me in a reasonable and correct path. Members’ support can benefit the continuation of this quality teaching.
         ~ Richard Chang
  • Calm Abiding practice has helped me to develop serenity, patience, and stability. I also derive much benefit from attending VEI presentations and receiving teachings from guest lamas. Being a member of the Monastery helps me to support these programs. Another benefit is the feeling that I am part of a living tradition. Life has additional hope and purpose as a result of membership.
         ~ Larry La Caille
  • Sitting in the Monastery and chanting the Twelve Deeds of Lord Buddha and the Chenrezi meditation each Sunday brings to me a deep sense of peace. The beauty, the feeling of being part of a centuries-old tradition, the chanting and meditation take my consciousness to another level of awareness.
         ~ Chandra Madrona
  • Being around the warmth and love that Rinpoche embodies is very beneficial to happiness.
         ~ Eugene Pagano

Special Benefits of Membership
In recognition of their commitment to the Monastery, members enjoy:

  • Free borrowing privileges at the Monastery’s Library, which houses 2,500 books on Buddhism, Tibet, and comparative religion.

  • Discounted rates for use of the Tara Meditation Center at the beautiful 72-acre Earth Sanctuary on Whidbey Island.

  • Discounted rates for programs hosted by the Monastery’s education branch, the Virupa Educational Institute. Its year round schedule of programs includes talks, lectures, workshops, and concerts.

  • The privilege to elect at the annual meeting representatives to Sakya Monastery’s Board of Advisors.

  • The opportunity to participate in the life of the Monastery through committee work and program development.

  • Contribute to the physical and spiritual environment of the Monastery by electing to volunteer your time and skills.

  • Regular empowerments to advance one’s spiritual practice.

  • The Buddhist fable of the Four Friends—the alliance of an elephant, monkey, hare, and partridge who work together in order to reach fruit on a tree--is a delightful reminder of the synergistic nature of community. When harmony, cooperation, and collaboration are present, individuals benefit as well as the community.

Joining the Monastery
