The Community and the Opportunity
Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism is a spiritual community and cultural center
led by renowned lamas from Tibet. It is dedicated to the realization and practice
of wisdom, loving-kindness, and compassion, in order to nurture and bring happiness
to all beings. The Monastery has several resident monks, but the congregation
is largely composed of lay members. They actively embrace patience, kindness,
generosity, and peace in their lives.
As a lay member you enjoy the rare and extraordinary privilege
of studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism directly under the guidance of lamas
who were trained in traditional Tibet before the Chinese occupation (1959). H.H.
Jigdal Dagchen Sakya, the founder and leader of the Monastery, is one of the
few qualified lamas capable of bestowing Buddha’s most important oral teachings
and transmissions. He is the second eldest non-sectarian Tibetan Buddhist Master living
today.
Reflections on the Value of Membership
Teachings and meditations taught by Rinpoche and
conducted by other resident members are so important in guiding me in a
reasonable and correct path. Members’ support can benefit the continuation
of this quality teaching.
~ Richard Chang
Calm Abiding practice has helped me to develop serenity,
patience, and stability. I also derive much benefit from attending VEI
presentations and receiving teachings from guest lamas. Being a member of
the Monastery helps me to support these programs. Another benefit is the
feeling that I am part of a living tradition. Life has additional hope and
purpose as a result of membership.
~ Larry La Caille
Sitting in the Monastery and chanting the Twelve Deeds
of Lord Buddha and the Chenrezi meditation each Sunday brings to me a deep
sense of peace. The beauty, the feeling of being part of a centuries-old
tradition, the chanting and meditation take my consciousness to another
level of awareness.
~ Chandra Madrona
Being around the warmth and love that Rinpoche embodies
is very beneficial to happiness.
~ Eugene Pagano

The Buddhist fable of the Four Friends—the
alliance of an elephant, monkey, hare, and partridge who work together in order
to reach fruit on a tree--is a delightful reminder of the synergistic nature
of community. When harmony, cooperation, and collaboration are present, individuals
benefit as well as the community.
