Friday, July 25
Time 7:30-9:00 pm
Location: Shrine Room
Suggested Contribution: $40 Public, $30 Members
Pre registration and payment required

All are welcome

Sakya Monastery is honored to announce that His Eminence Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, a lineage holder of the Sakya Order of Tibetan Buddhism and son of His Holiness Sakya Trizin, will be coming to Seattle this month to bestow a teaching and an initiation at Sakya Monastery as part of his 2008 U.S. teaching tour.

In Tibetan Buddhist practice, the Four Thoughts that Turn the Mind are the basic foundation for providing a firm motivation for pursuing the Buddhist path, and a useful tool to pursue any spiritual path.

The Four Thoughts are: to appreciate the opportunity of the preciousness of this human birth; to recognize our own mortality, as well as the impermanence of all phenomena; to recognize that our behavior is going to shape our experience in this life and future lives (karma); to recognize our confusion and the difficulties of this worldly life (samsara).

H.E. Gyana Vajra Rinpoche, age 29, has received decades of rigorous training from his father, as well as many other lamas such as H.E. Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, H.E. Luding Khen Rinpoche, The Very Venerable Khenpo Appey Rinpoche, and the late Khenpo Migmar Rinpoche. H.E. Gyana Vajra Rinpoche completed his monastic ritual training at Sakya Monastery in Dehra Dun, India and his philosophical training at Sakya College.

1:30PM DHARMA LECTURE: THE NGONDRO PRACTICE

Offered by Tulku Yeshi Gyatso Rinpoche
Saturday, July 26, 2008 (this Saturday)
Time: 1:30 pm
Location: Shrine Room
Suggested Contribution: $25 Public, $20 Members (Please Note: no one will be turned away for lack of funds)

Ngondro is a set of four preliminary practices that lay the foundation for the higher practices in the Vajrayana tradition. The purpose of the Ngondro practices is to enable its practitioners to purify their body, speech, and mind, to remove physical and mental obscurations, to gain merit, to increase faith, to cultivate the four contemplations that turn the mind toward the Dharma, and to acquire the two accumulations of merit (the cause) and wisdom (its result) that lead to Buddhahood.

In these dharma lectures, we will be using the Sakya Monastery Ngondro book, The Excellent Path of the Two Accumulations. For those attendees who do not have this book, copies will be available for sale before the lecture. The lecture will last approximately two hours and will be composed of two 55 minute sessions: 1) Teachings, followed by  2) Practice, and Questions and Answers.

This is the first in a series of five weekly lectures that Tulku Yeshi will be offering. The topics of future lectures will be decide by the participants. Dagchen Rinpoche has asked that Tulku Yeshi share these teachings with Sakya Monastery members and friends beginning this Saturday.

Pre-requisite: Tulku Yeshi notes that these teachings and practices are not to be taken lightly. Therefore, these lectures are recommended only for students who can maintain Samaya—the precious bond between guru and student—and who can respect the Three Jewels.

Ven. Tulku Yeshi Gyatso Rinpoche is a Dzogchen master and the reincarnation of Dzogchen Gyaltsab Thodo Rinpoche. He was recognized by H.H. Dalai Lama's Nyingmapa teacher Kyabje Trulshig Rinpoche.  He received teachings from twenty-five masters representing all five schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Tulku Yeshi has written eight books, seven of which have been published, on the subject of Tibetan Buddhism and culture including A One Thousand Year History of Sakyapa. He also writes novels, poetry for mind training, provides Tibetan astrology readings, and can bestow empowerments. Currently he working on Dharma activities at Sakya Monastery in Seattle and is working on his own biography, Magic and Monk.

Get together with friends to discuss the dharma! Sogyal Rinpoche praises our current selection, The Joy of Living, as “The first of its kind…a truly compelling and infinitely practical fusion of Tibetan Buddhism and scientific ideas.” Its author, meditation adept Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, suffered from panic disorder in his early childhood, worked with it through practice, and at age 17, became the youngest retreat master in Tibetan Buddhist history. He also became a student of science in his childhood and has contributed to science as a remarkable research subject for the neuroscientists at the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior. Director of the laboratory, Richard J. Davidson, calls The Joy of Living “a beautiful tapestry of Buddhist insight woven together with modern science.”
