In the Sakya Khon families, there are numerous biographies about the sons but it is rare to find information about their daughters, the Jetsunmas. Though Jetsunmas were given the same religious trainings as the sons and many were excellent practitioners, their lives are not well-known. Today, you will be introduced to three significant Jetsunmas who received the Lamdre teachings and taught them to the others. The first is Jetsun Chime Tenpai Nyima who is in the Vajrayogini transmission guru lineage, the second is Phuntsok Palace’s Jetsunma Tamdrin Wangmo who had innumerable students including four Sakya Trizins and the third is Tara Palace’s Jetsun Pema Trinlei, a great adept or siddha in the Vajrayogini tradition. All three are extraordinary practitioners and exemplary teachers.
Dr. Elisabeth Benard teaches in the Asian Studies program at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma. She has been researching the Jetsunmas, daughters of the Sakya Khon families, for numerous years and has interviewed some members of the Khon Families, including Dagmo Jamyang Sakya, Phuntsok Palace’s Jetsunmas Tsegen Wangmo and Chimi Wangmo.
