The three Stages of Meditation texts set forth the process for the potential bodhisattva to cultivate bodhicitta and then develop calm abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipashyana) and progress through the bodhisattva stages to buddhahood. The cultivation of insight requires the use of both scripture and reasoning to understand emptiness; in the first Stages of Meditation, Kamalashila sets forth the three forms of wisdom: the wisdom derived from learning, the wisdom derived from reflection, and the wisdom derived from cultivation, explaining that the last of these gradually destroys the afflictive obstructions and the obstructions to omniscience. The second Stages of Meditation considers many of these same topics, stressing that the achievement of the fruition of buddhahood requires the necessary causes, in the form of the collection of merit and the collection of wisdom. Both the first and second works espouse the doctrine of mind-only.
