Join Venerable Khenpo Jampa for the final class of The Way of the Bodhisattva, (Bodhisattvacaryavatara), Chapter 9 this January 29th. Khenpola will also teach about Dedication of Merit.
Shantideva (685-763 AD) was one of the eighty-four mahasiddhas of India from Nalanda University. He composed the Bodhisattvacaryavatara.
Born into a royal family, he renounced his princely life and was ordained as a bikkshu (monk) at Nalanda University. Before The Way of the Bodhisattva was composed, he was detested by his fellow monks. In order to humiliate him, he was requested to give a lecture on philosophy. This composition was the result. It is said that when he gave these teachings for the first time, his body levitated high from his throne.
This text is highly praised for its depth and acuity in imparting the path to Buddhahood. The 9th Chapter’s focus is on the Madhyamika’s philosophical view of wisdom. It is particularly challenging to comprehend without the guidance of a teacher.
