Differentiation of the Middle Way and the Extreme (Skt. Madhyāntavibhāga) is believed to be written in the 4th century and is one of the Five Dharma Treatises of Maitreya. The text is considerably significant in terms of presenting, comprehensively, a compact path to liberation according to the Mind Only (Skt.Yogācāra) view. In my opinion, it is the summary of The Ornament of the Māhāyānasūtrā (Skt. MahāyānaSūtrālamkāra) in a way, but it provides deeper analyses to clarify the philosophical claims and practices, namely, affliction, two truths, meditation, thirty-seven factors of enlightenment etc. In this course, we are going to discuss the principle and the practice of Mahayana path to liberation in accordance with the Mind Only School. By the end of the course, participants will have a better understanding of what is the path of liberation, what is its obstacle and how the liberation and ultimate reality is understood in Yogacara context.
